Inspiration: Nellie Bly, Investigative Journalist
Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman (aka Nellie Bly) was a pioneer in investigative journalism. She attended IUP (then known as the Pennsylvania Normal School) in 1879 for one term, but was forced to drop out due to lack of funds. She began her journalism career in Pittsburgh, PA, but since they only wanted her to write about fashion and pieces that related to women, she moved to New York City in 1886. Since finding journalism positions as a woman was hard at that time, she faked mental illness in an insane asylum for ten days, wrote a feature article on the experience, and the New York World published it as a 6-part series. A new style of investigative journalism was born. Bly is also famously known for her trip around the world in 72 days and her hands on approach to journalism. This piece represents the struggle females had in that time period to be seen as equals and to make their voices heard on a wide scale.
