Why does SSD need your support?

• SSD has produced TEN major full length productions since 2012 in Pittsburgh
  • Funding for the small arts has significantly gone down due to Pittsburgh foundations' shifting missions, thus, less projects over time
• Simmons has choreographed well over 20 pieces during this time
  • These are all self-produced in an effort to keep performance opportunities and artistic expression continual in Pittsburgh
• SSD teaches and enriches the adult community through Open Level training and creative experiences as well as professional training for Pittsburgh dancers
  • Dance learning opportunities are very needed in Pittsburgh​

• SSD brings song and dance (not being taught in schools anymore) to youth ages 4-12 every week through their Sing & Dance class
  • We believe in providing arts experiences for children. Period.
• SSD has expanded to provide choreographic and performance opportunities for Pittsburgh dancers outside of the company sphere
  • Performance and choreographic platforms that Pittsburgh creators can partake in are needed for artistic development and expression
• SSD continues to self-produce the Pittsburgh International Dance Film Festival
  • This is not funded by any foundation nor institution currently. This brings International art to Pittsburgh on a large scale.

Education -

• Sing and Dance after school program in partnership with HOPE Academy in East Liberty, ages 4-12
• Adult Open Classes - rotating styles, wide variety of levels for those that want to move
• Int/Adv Company Class for professional dancers - rotating styles, pushing the boundaries of performance and technical abilities

Performance - 

• Spring MISHMOSH - A mishmosh of choreographers coming together to explore and entertain
• Pittsburgh International Dance Film Festival - International dance films plus live SSD dance performance​
• 2027 Split-Bill Performance - Danish choreographer Julienne Doko and Pittsburgh based Shana Simmons bring two works to stage focusing on the body dysmorphia, giving birth, and the changing female body

Community Opportunities - 

• NACHMO - A choreography month with performance open to local and regional choreographers​
• Salon Series - During Fall 2025 and into Spring 2026 we offer open community Friday evenings to both present work and improvise with live musicians
