NACHMO PITTSBURGH Frequently Asked Questions:
How do I register and what all is entailed?
Registration is relatively straightforward. You will fill our form on the Community Tab of the SSD website. Basic questions will be asked on the form and a work sample will be asked for (so we can see your style). This work sample does not have to reflect your intended piece, but please note what kind of presentation you will be aiming for.
Is there a fee?
There is a $15 fee to cover rental and production costs.
When and where is the performance? Do I have to be a part of it?
This is a casual studio showing with minimal tech. Costumes encouraged. Saturday, February 8, 2025. Location in the works!
No, you do NOT have to be a part of the showcase! We will need to know performance commitments by January 31.
All performers will receive one complimentary ticket to the show.
What is the purpose of the January Challenge?
The January Challenge is meant to inspire new works of art. Preferably, we want you to show something new and we want you to take the prompts as creative encouragement to challenge yourself outside your tendencies and habits.
For example, if you are used to choreographing for a proscenium stage only and your medium encourages a very frontal perspective, one of the prompts might challenge you to experiment with performing in the round.
What can I expect and what are the expectations of me?
You can expect to receive weekly choreographic prompts to experiment with starting January 6-January 31!
You will need space to rehearse and play in.
You will have an opportunity to show your finalized or work in progress product at the showcase.
You will learn more about the Pittsburgh dance community and potentially make new friends while networking.
We expect you to take these prompts seriously and keep us (and the world!) up to date on how these prompts are altering your choreography.
We expect you to post via social media frequently (at least once a week) and tag #nachmopgh or @nachmopgh with the prompts!
We expect good communication between us and you.
When is registration?
This year, registration begins December 1 and ends January 10.
What are the registration questions?
What is your website and/or Instagram handle?
Approximately how many performers will you have?
What styles are you interested in presenting? What type of work is this? Check all that may apply.
Please provide a link to a work sample
Will you be able to present in-person on Saturday, February 8th? If this is a dance film, will you be able to attend?
I acknowledge my piece will be no longer than 5 minutes in length.
Would you be interested in a movement class in January? What day/time of the week generally works best for you?
Would you be willing to help volunteer to make NACHMO 2025 a big success? In what capacity? Check all that apply.
Will you commit to making a NEW work and/or utilizing the choreographic prompts to tweak or develop an already existing work?
How did you hear about NACHMO? Check all that apply.
I agree to use this performance/showcase opportunity to create in the spirit of NACHMO. Creating in the spirit of NACHMO means using the NACHMO prompts from January to create a new dance work. I understand this is a fair method alongside other presenting choreographers. By signing my name, I understand and will follow through on my commitment.
