Constructed Sight is a series of dance for films each created and inspired by a public work of art around Pittsburgh. Each choreographer is working to construct meaningful pieces of choreography by physically incorporating and being inspired by a variety of public works of art.

This project was formulated in direct response to the Covid-19 pandemic in an effort to continue generating meaningful and interactive dance performance events.

Binds & Bonds
Installation/Residency
Sunday, December 20, 2020
by Artist Dafna Rehavia

"How can we build the bonds necessary to transform the binds that hold us back?"
- Dafna Rehavia
Binds & Bonds, is a site specific installation exploring the somatic experience in response to trauma and healing. Created by Israel-born artist Dafna Rehavia, the work is a process developed as part of a 2020 residency at BOOM Concepts.

This program is a new video work that walks audiences through the exhibit, and includes a live tour element with the artist. Also included is a collaborative dance piece featuring dancers Shana Simmons and Chezney Douglas. The movement experience creates a visceral and emotional reflection of the three responses to trauma: flight, fight, and freeze. Artwork and dance are bound together in unity demonstrating that through movement, healing begins.

Following the screening the artists will have a live virtual discussion with BOOM Concepts’ Darrell Kinsel and audience members.

SHANA SIMMONS DANCE VIRTUAL GALA EVENT: A TOAST TO SSD!
Thursday, December 10, 2020
7:30pm Pre-Show Party (Zoom link, registration required)
8pm YouTube Premiere: Shana Simmons Dance YouTube Station

“It is not just the continual creation of artwork that must exist during this time. It is the ‘events’ and gatherings of humans together that create a sense of unity through artwork. It is the interaction that occurs, the responses to the artwork that must be heard. In a way, it is not just the artwork that needs to exist, it is the uplifting of the audience voice that elevates the voice of the artform.”

A Toast to SSD Premiere CLICK HERE
Shana Simmons Dance (SSD) presents A Toast to SSD, a brand new online gala event bringing folx together to celebrate dance and the holiday season. This virtual 1-hour event features a variety of artistic presentations, gathering people from all over the country to perform and support SSD and the Pittsburgh dance community. A Toast to SSD will feature guest musical artists: Off-Broadway directors Griffin Matthews (Dear White People) & Matt Gould, Pittsburgh all-female ensemble Kamratōn, Point Park University musical theater performers singing from Kinky Boots, along with performances both old and new from Shana Simmons Dance. This event is co-organized by Shana Simmons Dance company collaborator Jamie Erin Murphy.

The event will premiere for free on YouTube at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 10.
SSD saw success using YouTube Premiere to chat with viewers and receive feedback in real time during the Constructed Sight series. Viewers gathered around their devices each week, connecting live to the artists in a forum for discussion and appreciation.

A pre-show Zoom party will begin at 7:30 p.m., with a paparazzi-style feature of guests to kick off the event, guaranteed tunes to get you in the mood from DJ N8theSK8, a holiday cocktail demonstration to mix together from master bartender Jimmy Jakubik, and funny company interviews hosted by Joanna Dehler. Pre-registration will be required to attend this half hour portion.
